A 5000-mile detour via the Cayman Islands provides a scenic route to the City.
Imagine hundreds of banks and investment companies in one place - with a sunny climate, relaxed entry criteria and no commute to speak of.
Welcome to the Caymans - where UK qualifieds start becoming more marketable as soon as they touch down: 'As you build on your experience, you'll develop the skills and knowledge needed by financial services companies - you may even be seconded onto corporate finance projects,' says John Frazer of Think Global Recruitment. 'And after a two-year stint in audit, superb opportunities will present themselves at your clients and their competitors.'
The proliferation of American banks adds to the islands' allure: 'It's a brilliant place to acquire US GAAP expertise, making you a hot commodity in both New York and London ,' says Barbara Kirkup of recruiters ASA International. 'Those who leave the Caymans to work in the City or at other global financial centres often offer technical skills that UK experience alone can't provide.'
Qualifieds from smaller firms are also welcome, says Frazer: 'Good all-round accounting skills will still make you a good match with the Big 4 - their offices here are smaller, with a much more close-knit feel. And previous knowledge of financial services isn't at all necessary.'
And don't forget work-life balance, says Kirkup: 'Standards of living are high, income tax is non-existent and there are plenty of activities to get you out in the sun, being as relaxed or energetic as you like.'
